Happy New Year! Bonne Annee! Kenourios Chronos!

I know there's MANY of us who are pondering our New Year's resolution or shall we say lifestyle changes.  To make changes it takes a lot of determination and dedication.

It is a time to begin making yourself the focus of your life.

Since
ancient times The Labyrinth  has been a means to do just that. It is said that a labyrinth promotes your health whether it is physical, mental, emotional or spiritual by
giving you the ability to quiet your mind while you walk.

Most people  have heard of the famous ones located in
Chartes Cathedral, France
or
Grace Cathedral in San Francisco.

It has been referred to as a religious or sacred symbol. Yes, they can be found in spiritual locations, however it should not be dismissed as just that...

Worldwide.....public buildings, museums, parks, gardens, schools, medical centers and private organizations have created or maintained ancient labyrinths already in place.

The shape can be varied, simple or intricate and they can be found both inside and outside!

Walking a labyrith is recommended by many as a form of meditation to help with the healing of your body.

Wherever your travels take you this year.... whether it's international or domestic.
The
Labyrith Locator  has an excellent search engine to help you find a labyrinth
to visit. You might even find one near your hometown!

We wish you a year full of peacefulness and passport stamps!

Joyeux Noel!

A couple of days ago as our California weather became quite chilly, I grabbed my red scarf that was purchased on my very 1st visit to Paris.
It's amazing how one little act can bring back a flood of very wonderful memories!

My mom and I spent  2 weeks in France and during that time, John reorganized his Europe itinerary  to rendezvous for 2 very romantic days in Paris, we were still just dating then!

Little did I know that this was just the beginning of my Parisian day when I tied my scarf!!

Just a little reminder ...in the
packing section of the journal are videos that demonstrate a variety of ways to tie a scarf!

As I worked through my very long checklist as I had been feverishly doing for the last 2 weeks with little time to exhale, I found myself in
Los Gatos, a very charming place to live, visit and shop in!  I was picking up a gift in the Borders Bookstore, when a man next to me
asked if I had ever been to France and if so, could I suggest a guidebook to give to his wife.
Well, as I was making my suggestions of books, a Streetwise map, sharing a few of
my stories with him. I also suggested that he should  include a gift certificate
from Fleur de Cocoa, a local Patisserie.

As we said Adeiu....

it suddenly dawned on me ...I had forgotten a very important lesson that many different cultures have tried to impart on me....just to be still with yourself...to stop rushing, as we always seem to do in the States. I began to ponder why I embrace this elsewhere in the world,  and not at home.....

I then hurriedly headed over to
Fleur de Cocoa to begin exhaling!

The chef/owner is from France and is truly a MASTER!  It's not just an exquiste patisserie, his chocolates ooze decadence. The cafe menu offers quiches, french onion soup, croque monsieur to name just a few and they are as delectable as any cafe in France, maybe even better

As soon as the door bell jingles announcing my entrance...my limited French comes out fluently.. Bonjour!  Deux croissants e petit
chaud chocolate si vous plait!  Merci!

If you find yourself in the San Francisco Bay Area this little cafe is a MUST!

As I sipped my
chaud chocolate, I closed my eyes and there I was....
in Galleries LaFayette doing my Christmas shopping!

Tres Bien!

Now, just one more restaurant recommendation for you...

If you find yourself in the Napa Valley,
I highly recommend that you stop in at
Bouchon Bakery
in Yountville.
This Bakery is part of the famous michelin awarded  chef Thomas Keller's restaurant empire...
French Laundry, Per Se and Bouchon..
As mere paupers, his restaurants are out of our price range..
HOWEVER, a visit to this delectable bakery allows us to experience, savor and delight in Thomas Keller's culinary genius!

Take time check out both of these websites, if not for locations, menus then the pictures!

Moving along for our next topic ....

So, I've received several emails, asking me what kind of keychain turned ornaments did I have, and didn't they really just look like a keychain? I took just a few of them off of our tree and took a photo...each of them were under the equivalent of 5.00 USD.

Left to right...

Eiffel Tower...2 for 1 euro, purchased in the Marais district

Heart... 3 euro Albaster from Volterra Italy purchased on Honeymoon

Horse... 4 USD equivalent..clearance basket at Royal Copenhagen on Stroget Street

Gdansk City Skyline..2 euro at visitors center

Babushka doll...Star Princess clearance for Skan/Russia Cruise

Pacific Princess..5 USD antique brass keychain ship on one side, specs of ship on other

Au Revoir for now!

Mele Kalikimaka!

This weekend we picked out our Christmas tree from one of the remaining farms
in the Santa Clara Valley...the other orchard in San Jose we featured in our
Weekend Adventures section...which you can view in the link..
just scroll down until you see it, the music I added to this photo album ....says it all!

We spent the day decorating and I would like to share one of our traditions with you.

Each trip we take~ whether it's a weekend escape or a place requiring our passports,
we pick up a Christmas ornament as a souvenir!  Now, there are times that an
ornamnent is hard to find or ridiculously overpriced and what I've done is
pick up a higher quality key chain. I remove the key chain hardware and add a festive
ribbon to hang it on the tree.  As we unpack and hang each ornament it brings
back wonderful memories that we reminisce about, while Bing Crosby plays in the background!

One of my favorite ornaments is a handmade shell flower from Christmas Island.
My mom and I visited there on our Hawaii ~Tahiti cruise!

You can view the pictures of Christmas Island in
Karen's Cruise Corner, under the Pacific Princess!

This tradition began with  my Mom and Dad, when I was a child they would bring
me an ornament from each of their trips. This collection grew over the years
and when  I moved out I was able to bring it with me for my very own tree!

Our 1st present of the season has been ordered....for ourselves!!!

Costco was having the little Acer Aspire netbook on sale, so we decided
to go for it!  It's only 2.3 pounds and since John and I fly on many INTER Europe
flights, where your carry on allowance is only 8 kilos this will be perfect!

I will be sharing with you my thoughts on this new toy, once it arrives and we have a chance to play with it. You can click on the link above to check it out!

  Website updates...
I'm aware that the Meteora video isn't working and I'm going to go through the website checking each video and updating as needed.

I'm also pondering another blogger format, perhap utilizing Blogger.

Any thoughts or suggestions on that?? Please send me an email!

At some point, I'm  going to be updating Karen's Cruise Corner and moving info from blogs much earlier in the year to sections in the journal that they apply to for yours (and ours)
time saving convenience!

A hui hou!

Bonjour!

There's nothing like walking into a home with the smell of some sort of spice that has permeated the air....instantly your taste buds are tantalized and memories seem to flood your mind...

The Spice trade began around 2000 BC!
Here's a little history for you to read

Spices and Travel go hand in hand...whether you visit a nutmeg processor
in Grenada, the spice markets in Istanbul or just tasting the regional cuisine

Many of us use Spice Island products,  and you really MUST spend some time
on their website...

There's information on how to use and store each spice,  recipes galore and that's just beginning!

As you wander the website and with any journey that you take you will also be able to experience the history and  view artwork that you never imagined!

When we 1st saw these unique spice creations, we were so intrigued!

Here are a few youtube videos on how they were made....enjoy!

Hi Everyone!

I know it's been almost a month since I last had a blog entry...my sincere apologies!

After recovering from the Mal de disembarkment, I came down with a rip roaring cold that had me down for the count...leaving my to do list mulitplying like bunnies as the only thing I managed to accomplish was taking my cough syrup every 4-6 hours!
Then.... Thanksgiving arrived!

I'm feeling much better and I'm ready to get this blog back up and running!

So, thank you for your patience and I promise that there will be several entries a week from now  on!!!

Check back in on Wednesday for an extra long blog!

Good Night, Sleep Tight!

Karen

Buenos Noches!

Well, as many of you already know my mom and I have been back for almost a week!

I was planning on posting sooner, however I developed a case of  Mal de debarquement.
That doesn't mean ...I'm sad I had to get off the cruise ship, but it's actually land sickness.
I have never been seasick, but I do get a pretty strong case of
Mal de debarquement.
Each time we cruise, this has been going on for about 20 years and at least 50 cruises!
I feel off centered, dizzy and a bit of vertigo...kindof like I had too much to drink!
I usually place those seabands on my wrists and just try to sleep it off!
It's been said hormones can play a role and since my hormones are out of whack from
the endometriosis, that would explain things!

I just posted Star Princess photos in Karen's Cruise Corner. We sailed on the Star Princess
for my 4th time, this sailing was the 2nd after drydock and all the new additions.

I can't say I was impressed!

However, we had a very relaxing cruise and partaked in 2 massages each, seaweed wraps,
fitness training and just a lot of relaxing on our balcony!

Everytime that John and I wander from home and spend the night elsewhere, we are always reminded ......there's no place like home...

and the reason for that is our WESTIN Heavenly Bed

When we became engaged and moved in together, we realized each of our double beds
had to go!  We did extensive research and test drives and absolutely fell in love with the WESTIN Heavenly Bed.

If you haven't had a chance to stay in a Westin Hotel, we highly recommend the splurge.

If you really want to check out the bed, Nordstrom's has it displayed and available for
you to crawl into..seriously! I can honestly say and John would agree our best deep sleeps have been because of this incredible bed!

We didn't purchase the sheets, just the bed and box spring. We found that Bed, Bath and Beyond has an incredible selection of comfy sheets! The combination of the two always brings forth this same comment from both of us...aaaahhhhh....HEAVEN!

Pleasant Dreams!

Ciao for now!

Hola!

My mom and I leave tomorrow to board the Star Princess for a round trip San Francisco
10 day cruise to Mexico.

You can follow us by watching the
Star Princess WEB CAM

We will have stops in  Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Zihuatanejo and Acapulco!  We're quite excited as the temperatures in Mexico are in the 90's, we booked a balcony and the Star Princess just came out of dry dock on October 10th!  This will be my 4th time onboard this ship and I'm looking forward to checking out the new upgrades and additions that were done during dry dock!

Margaritas and siestas are part of our big plans!

I will attempt to blog and post pictures during the cruise, but it will depend on the internet
connection!

We return on October 31st, that weekend I will be catching up on all my blog entries and picture albums for our weekend adventure to the Gold Country with a side trip to the famous Jelly Belly Factory and of course everything about this cruise.

I'm also planning during the month of November new additions to Karen's Cruise Corner!

So, check back in the next couple of days, but if nothing has been posted ..
please return around November 1st!

Hasta Luego!

Bonjour!

I knew my last blog was being passed around, so I wanted to leave it up for awhile to make it easier for those that had never visited our little website before to locate...

but it's now time for a new entry.... I have a couple of things for you .....

In case you haven't seen it yet, check out our new
GAMES area in the JOURNAL section ~
Each one is great fun and they should keep you entertained for hours!

Do you park your car at the airport? Have you seen this website for
Park N Fly locations?
What a great resource...you can make a reservation and/or check on rates! That way there are no surprises at the airport arriving or departing!

Many of us use rechargeable AA batteries for cameras and other items. We pack the battery charger in our suitcase to save on the cost of purchasing batteries when we travel. I just wanted to give you a heads up when traveling with a charger that saves space because it has no cord and is flush with the wall when you plug it in. In theory this is great, however if you have to add an adaptor and/or converter it becomes too heavy to stay in the socket.
Also, many cruise lines have placed the electrical socket under a mirror, so the charger can't remain flush with the wall...you will want to search out a charger with a cord. I have found them
at Target or the Kodak Store is
selling an international charger online for your travels abroad!

and finally for my cruisers out there... A Live from the Emerald Princess Blog!

"Commodore Dave" is documenting his Trans Atlantic Voyage!

**this blog is for a cruise agency ~ I have not used them nor am I recommending them, but the Blog is GREAT!**

Au Revoir!

Hi!

I'm so happy to report that tis the season for the Ten Thousand Villages
Holiday Festivals to begin. There are several stores throughout the United States and Canada, but beginning in October these special Fair Trade Artisan Festivals appear in towns throughout the United States and Canada. This organization is incredible and I have included the link above for you to learn more.

I have shopped at our local  festival the last couple of years. Each of the crafts are exquisitely handmade and truly a work of art that is hard to find elsewhere, unless you are able to visit one of these villages. Best of all, it is all Fair Trade! Ten Thousand Villages is known to be a very ethical company. If you are wondering what to buy for the holidays or birthdays next year, these 2 day festivals not only give you the opportunity to buy something truly unique and special ...but  they give you the chance to embrace the holiday spirit within by helping others help themselves.

Ten Thousand Villages does have a
Youtube channel,
and while the videos seem a little
repetitive, they each show a variety of  handicrafts
and  a few of the artists at work.

While many of my blog entries are just tips and I leave it at that...

I would like to REALLY encourage to check out the website, find a fair
near
you and at least pop in for 10 minutes...and for an extra bonus..
you might find samples of complimentary Fair Trade Coffee and Chocolate!

Below, is an EXCELLENT clip from a news report about Ten Thousand Villages,
the reporter toured an actual store, so you can see many of the handicrafts  you might find at your local fair!

Unfortunately, I couldn't delete the limited advertising prior to the actual story

Bonjour!

Well, as many of you noticed I deleted several Blogs regarding the Daily Candy episode.

I just didn't feel it was necessary to keep any negativity that was generated by that woman
on our blog/website.

I've been a little busy with prep work for the cruise my mom and I are taking in exactly 19 days!  We are leaving on the Star Princess for a roundtrip Mexico run out of SFO!
So, no air which is always a treat!  Right now, the ship is in dry dock being spruced up, new public space areas are going in, along with a large movie screen for Movies under the stars! We've done this run a zillion times it seems like, while many cruises we take are for the destination, this is a girl bonding getaway! We've booked a balcony, watching the waves is our favorite activity!   Our ports are Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, Zihuatenejo and Acapulco!

So, I have a few things for you today...

Delta Airlines is having a special on transferring miles...you receive double miles in the process. If you transfer 10,000 you receive 20,000 in the account. It's a limited time offer,
so check here for details

My latest gadget that I'm loving and wanted to share with you is the
IGO battery charging  systems. You have a small cord or portable battery and then you interchange just the tips that fit your specific electronic part! The portable battery is smaller than a cell phone and then I have a tip for my cell phone, John's cell phone, bluetooth, and ipod!  We never have to carrying all of our corded chargers again...A fantastic space saver!

Another tip I have to save you from packing converters and adapters is.....
just buy an electrical appliance in Europe if you travel there frequently.
I have a curling iron from Olomouc, Czech Republic, a hair dryer from Santa Margherita Ligure, Italy and our rechargeable AA battery pack for our cameras from Zagreb, Croatia!
A great souvenir and the stories we have of locating and purchasing these items are priceless memories!

Ciao for now!

Hi Everyone!

This past week I've been immersed in trip planning ...internationally and domestically! As  I was knee deep in  international communication  and small town schedules regarding museums being opened for our weekend getaway up north it dawned on me .. How frustrating and scary trip planning and the actual journey with road bumps along the way,  must be for the less seasoned traveler...

So, I thought I would share with you a few highlights from my week!  I'm sure many of you will smile and while this advice is common sense which we all know ...it's was interesting to actually experience it all at once first hand

Travel Lesson 1 - Read the fine print

Always read the fine print of every correspondence sent back and forth with a hotel, tour company, transportation option, etc.  Make sure your email mentions the complimentary breakfast,  wi fi, and airport connection and all other pertinent details in the final confirmation. Print out 2 copies one for the hotel if there is discrepancy and one for yourself.

You know the con game...where you follow the 3 nuts, shells, cards...that is how I felt in dealing with hotels in Bulgaria and tour companies in Turkey. There's a rate on the computer, an email is sent for inquiry a higher rate comes back, I then mention the lower rate on the computer and ANOTHER rate comes  back with a package with a suite, I email back..thank you but we don't need a package or a suite...then ANOTHER rate comes back with package no suite, I just agree to it..Book the room... confirmation comes back with package rate, but telling me that I now will have PAY for otherwise complimentary items....another round of emails...all is well. Then 2 days later we add one more night and the rate has now doubled and then the emails begin again..this happened in assorted variations with 3 mainstream hotels in Sofia, with people who were communicating effectively in English...and each of these rate/amenity changes were buried deep into the email...

Turkey is known for their hospitality and my hotel inquiries went smoothly, it's the tour companies that have posted one itinerary on their websites, changed the itinerary add surcharges, then changed rates, hotels that they guaranteed they used..and here we go again.

I kept thinking how the guy moving the cards, shell and nuts around says...keep your eye on  the rate , keep your eye on the rate....now you see it ...now you don't ...ok Karen...tell me where and what do you think your rate really is!!! ??

Everything worked out!
But it was a flurry of emails and A LOT of patience.
I don't necessarily think I was trying to be hustled and I hope I wasn't
...but it's always good to be aware of the details.

Travel Lesson 2 ~Verify hours and activities

We are planning our final trip to the Gold Country in October, the most northern  part of the region that most tourists ignore. There's quite a few small museums in the area..but the times in the guidebooks have been vague. We like to plan our time accordingly..so we don't miss out on anything. I called the phone number listed for one of the Downieville Museums and a woman answered Hello! I said ..oh I'm sorry I must have the wrong number I was trying to reach the museum..she says..oh, well I'm retired from there they just listed my number..I inquire if she knows if they will be open the weekend we will be there and she says...I'll call the boys now to TELL THEM they have to work that weekend. I then asked about another museum in town...
and she says ...no that's closed ...the guy who ran it died and no one else wants to do it, you know there's only about 300 people here in town. So we kind of just make our own hours!

Travel Lesson 3 ~ Karma

What you put out in the world to your fellow traveler will be returned to you when you least expect it!
Last month when we made the switch to include Turkey, that very same day before I posted the information on the website..I received a very thoughtful email from a woman named Dilara..she thanked me for the information on our site and that it was very helpful to her...and then in closing her email she says....I'm from Turkey, if you ever visit here and need advice let me know! She has been a wealth of information for us and we are so appreciative

While trying to decide how we were going to visit Delphi and Meteora I stumbled across a posting on Trip Advisor from someone who lived in Delphi and I emailed them with a few questions, which they promptly answered with advice that was instrumental on how we planned our visit to Delphi! They also shared with me their
personal website on Delphi!

So we have wrapped up the hotel choices, our tours for Greece and Turkey...all that remains are our air tickets between Bulgaria to Istanbul and Istanbul to Athens.

Exhale..

This weekend we are taking my mom up to the De Young Museum as the last part of her birthday present to see the Chihuly exhibit and out to our favorite Belgium Restaurant  in San Francisco! I'm hoping I will be allowed to take photos at the exhibit.

Here's the link to the exhibit,  wander around until you find the gift shop to get an idea of the cost of some of these masterpieces! Below are 2 excellent videos to learn more!

Bonjour..

My goal this week was to be up to date on Our Weekend Adventure Blog entries.

Especially since another fun filled weekend begins in 14 hours!!!

Last Sunday, we finally had a chance to celebrate my birthday just the 2 of us. We headed south with the final destination being Carmel and Pacific Grove. On the way we made a pit stop in
Castroville . If you've seen or ate an artichoke in the USA, it's probably been grown in Castroville. I bet you didn't know that Marilyn Monroe was the very 1st Artichoke Festival Queen!

This is also home to a famous roadside attraction that we've been visiting since we were very little kids...THE GIANT ARTICHOKE! It's a great mini produce market ~ you can use the facilities, pick
up some beverages and snacks..and of course the delicious deep fried artichokes...not so good for the hips and heart, but your taste buds will be so very happy!

We then headed to our very favorite restaurant for breakfast in Carmel,
The Village Corner !
The food is delicious and the outdoor garden setting with the fire pit just enhances the romantic ambiance! There are 2 other famous restaurants in town that we use to eat at...
Katy's Place and the Tuck Box ...however with fame has come attitude ...so while we suggest these two for the excellent food ..the service can be a bit lacking!

After breakfast we strolled around town and stopped into MY candy shop, at least that's what I've called it since I was 2 years old..and you will see why any child or adult for that matter would stake their claim to it, when you view the photos!

Then we headed on a scenic drive along the ocean to Carmel River State Beach, where John had proposed 2 years ago! I labeled one of the photos as the exact spot, so you can see the beauty of the area!

We continued our day heading to
Pacific Grove a town which was the summer camp for the Methodist Church back in the 1800's to early 1900's! It has one of the largest concentration of Victorian homes in the USA. All very charming, and it's a wonderful walk through the neighborhoods. The houses in the photos were all built between 1887-1915. We did see a couple for sale and a 800 square foot house was over $800,000! Location, location, location! Also, Pacific Grove is part of Monarch Butterfly's migration and in season, the town is covered in beautiful butterflys!

After our walking tour, we visited
Point Pinos Lighthouse the oldest working lighthouse on the west coast...since 1855! The tour was self guided, however there are docents available to answer your questions! Definitely worth a stop into if you're in the neighborhood

The links above have a ton of information ~ if you would like to find out more of the history of the towns, the lighthouse, and of course read the menus and get directions to the restaurants!

Enjoy!

Aloha!

A couple of things for today...

I wanted to let you know that one of my favorite resources in trip planning has been a site called Porttime. Sadly, they are closing down.

This website was a great way to find out how many cruise ships would be in port with you, whether you were traveling on a cruise ship OR by land. In fact, in planning which day we would travel to Ephesus next year on our land based vacation, I used Porttime to find a day when NO cruise ships would be in, so it would allow us to experience Ephesus with minimal crowds.

There are other sites out there, that provide the same service but not as comprehensive, and if they are, it's not complimentary like Porttime.

One I would suggest is Cruisecal.com..there is a fee of $3.00 a month or $24.99 on a yearly basis. A small price to pay after spending thousands of dollars on your vacation.
There are other options specifically for a cruise region such as Alaska, which I will be adding into Karen's Cruise Corner .

Next up...

It's been 95 degrees here, but Fall Foliage will be around the corner!
So, for those of you that are pondering experiencing the spectacular colors of the season..
Here are a couple of websites to help you with your preliminary planning...

CNN's when and where to go with further links and Yankee Foliage .

John and I usually go up to California's Gold Country for a nice weekend getaway...the drives are scenic, the towns are charming and the area is steeped in California History!

Hi!

It's now time to get back to blogging!

First, I wanted to point out a little something new we added in Karen's Cruise Corner...
John did a little java script for me and each time you visit that page the vintage cruise posters will randomly change!

I'm a little behind with our weekend adventures, so let me catch you up to speed!
2 weekends ago on August 23rd we took my mom up to Filoli Estate for her birthday.
Many of you know it as the house from the Dynasty television show.

It is located between Stanford University and San Francisco. The history is quite interesting, built in 1915-1917 for the Bourne Family, who made their fortune at Empire Mines in the Gold Country of California. Then purchased in 1936 by The Roths, who owned Matson Navigational Line. Mrs. Roth's name was Lurline as in the
S.S. Lurline ! We were able to see some great cruise memorabilia inside the house! The gardens are exquisite, quite large and beautiful to wander Spring, Summer and Fall! To learn more about Filoli go to Filoli.org

Enjoy the albums of the House and Gardens!

because of this I have archived the large Blog into smaller blogs ..

The videos, smilebox albums and text all remain, but the photos have been removed for the time being to complete the transfer.

If there's a particular image you are interested in, please let me know and I will send it to you in an attachment!

I would love to hear feedback on our new site..

what works and what doesn't work for you and any suggestions on making snazzy!

at the same time...

Please remember it's still in the beta version..and we will be adding more along the way!
99% of the content remains ....however it might of shifted a bit or is being presented in another way!

Thanks for your feedback and patience as we finishing unpacking in our new home!
